Zimmer Biomet (often simply referred to as “Zimmer”) is a medical manufacturing company that designs, produces, and sells artificial joints and other products used in surgeries and trauma care. Zimmer produces more knee implants used in knee replacement procedures than any other medical device provider and has control over more than $7 billion of the knee implant market worldwide.
Over the past few years, Zimmer has run into many problems with many of its knee implant products, as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued recalls of several of its products due to defective or potentially dangerous components. The most recent recall took place in March of 2015 and involved the Zimmer Persona Trabecular Metal Tibial Plate.
Problems with the Zimmer Persona knee implant
Zimmer markets the Persona Tibial Plate as being close to a natural knee as it does not require cement to fix it to the bone and the plate can be used in combination with many different implant components. However, though the company used the secure fixation of the plate as a selling point, many individuals have experienced complications with the following:
- The plate loosens and causes pain and inflammation.
- Radiolucent lines form, which are gaps between two knee implant components or between the plate and the bone.
- The gaps may fill with debris, tissue, and/or joint fluid.
- Bone damage called osteolysis can occur.
- The implant can completely fail.
Though the Zimmer Persona Trabecular Metal Tibial Plate has been recalled and doctors have been advised to stop using this product, the recall did not occur before patients suffered injury from this medical device. Zimmer received an increasing number of reports of complications and injuries. Many victims have to had corrective surgery and other costly medical treatments.
