A settlement was reached in the Michigan Medical Malpractice Lawsuit filed against Jackson Cardiology Associates and members of its staff. Records indicate the suit was filed in connection with several cases of patients undergoing unnecessary medical treatments.
According to an article released by WLNS 6 News, certain patients underwent surgeries, such as heart catheterizations, that were later deemed unnecessary by other medical professionals. Plaintiffs testified they often had no significant heart blockages that would require the procedures.
Since Medicaid paid for a large portion of the procedures, the federal government became involved as a mediator in the case. An agreement was reached last week mandating the defendants to pay $2 million.
Michigan state law requires that doctors take the necessary steps to ensure the safety of patients they treat. Failure to do so may result in lawsuits against the facilities where negligence occurred, treating physicians, and other medical staff. Proving negligence can be a complex process, though.
